Education Experts Chart Path to Ending Out-of-School Children Crisis
The Federal Government has called on education experts to come up with ideas to help the government improve basic education and address the problem of out-of-school children.
The Minister of Education, Dr Olatunji Alausa, made the call in a message to the opening ceremony of this year’s Basic Education in Nigeria Boot Camp Summit in Lagos.
The theme of the three-day summit is, “Improving Access to Inclusive Quality Education for all Children in Nigeria; Addressing the Challenges of Out-of-School Children.”
Dr Alausa stressed the importance of the DOTS policy of the ministry in ensuring that every child of school age receives quality education.
Delivering the minister’s message, the Director, Basic Education in the Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Folake Olatunji-David urged participants in the summit to share ideas and proffer solutions to ensure no child is left behind in education.
In his message, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Suwaiba Sani Ahmad said the current administration was prepared to support and implement policies that would take education to an enviable height.
Welcoming participants to Lagos, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said his administration was committed to improving access to basic and inclusive education for all.
Governor Sanwo-Olu represented by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr Tolani Ali-Balogun said it was important to address the root causes of poverty and inequality leading to a surge in the number of out-of-school children.
Delivering the lead paper, Emeritus Professor Pius Obanya of the Institute of Education of the University of Ibadan called for a revisit of the UBE Implementation Guidelines of 1999, the UBE Roadmap of 2015 and the National Teachers Education Policy for a holistic approach to basic education.
In an interview, the Executive Secretary National Commission for Almajiri and Out-of-School Children Education, Dr Sani Idris said the commission would soon begin a vigorous advocacy on the problem of out-of-school children.
Education experts, including commissioners for education, heads of state universal basic education boards, development partners, and non-governmental organizations are attending the Basic Education in Nigeria Boot Camp Summit 2024 in Lagos.
