Lagos Unveils Digital Address System to Boost Smart CITY Drive

Ikeja to Pilot Lagos Identifier Programme from July 1st

The Lagos State Government has launched a groundbreaking digital addressing system designed to enhance ease of doing business, improve service delivery, and boost internal revenue generation.

Announcing the initiative at a media briefing in Lagos, the Special Adviser to the Governor on e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr. Babatunde Olajide, said the digital addressing system—branded the Lagos Identifier Programme—will be deployed across all local governments, beginning with Ikeja from July 1st.

According to Dr. Olajide, the programme marks a major step in actualising Lagos State’s smart city vision by integrating location intelligence into various sectors including housing, transportation, e-hailing services, emergency response, urban planning, and security.

“This system will have a real-life impact not just on businesses and government services, but on the everyday lives of Lagosians. From faster emergency response to improved tax administration and planning, the benefits are broad-based,” Olajide stated.

He explained that the digital house numbers and street identifiers will be produced and installed by state agencies in collaboration with a technical partner.

The system will use QR-code technology embedded in digital plates, allowing residents and service providers to scan and access vital information about each property.

Mr. Yinka Adesiyan, a representative of the technical partners working with the Lagos State Government, explained that each street and building will receive a unique digital identity.

“This code will serve as a digital gateway to access location-specific information. With a simple scan, residents, delivery agents, and emergency services can pinpoint locations faster and more accurately,” Adesiyan said.

He added that the technology also aligns with global smart city trends and will position Lagos as a leader in urban digital innovation.

The Lagos Identifier Programme is part of the state’s broader THEMES Plus agenda to leverage technology and innovation for better governance. Authorities say the initiative will eventually be extended to all 20 local governments and 37 LCDAs across the state.

The project also aligns with broader federal ambitions for a digitally integrated Nigeria and is expected to improve data collection, strengthen physical planning, and simplify property documentation processes.

The government has called on residents to cooperate with field officers during the installation process and to take ownership of the system as a tool for better service access and accountability.
