Lagos Monarch, Akiolu, Seeks Urban Renewal of Lagos Island, Warns Against Displacement
The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, on Sunday called for the urban regeneration of Lagos Island but cautioned against the displacement of its indigenous residents in the process.
Speaking with journalists at his palace in Iga Iduganran, after marking his 82nd birthday, the monarch emphasized the need for the State Government to reintroduce routine checks by sanitation officers at the grassroots to revive cleanliness and promote a healthier environment across Lagos.
Oba Akiolu renewed his longstanding call for a special status for Lagos, noting that the nation’s revenue has increased following the removal of fuel subsidy.
He warned politicians against the selfish acquisition of public funds, stressing that everyone will ultimately give an account of their stewardship before God and humanity.
Reacting to a recent claim by U.S. President Donald Trump alleging Christian genocide in Nigeria, Oba Akiolu urged him to seek proper intelligence before making such statements. He reiterated that both Christians and Muslims in Nigeria have coexisted peacefully for generations and should continue to do so.
The revered monarch also appealed to Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stating that the dividends of the “Renewed Hope” agenda are already beginning to manifest.
Oba Akiolu expressed hope that generations unborn would uphold his legacy of kindness, truthfulness, compassion, integrity, and discipline, describing his personal philosophy as “say it as you see it.”
