2024/25 Legal Year: Sanwo-Olu Backs Judiciary on Access to Justice

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has praised the state judiciary for digitalizing court processes to make access to justice across the state more convenient.


Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, made these remarks at a Special Thanksgiving Service held at the Lagos Central Mosque to mark the commencement of the 2024/2025 legal year.


The governor, in his goodwill message, stated that the digitization of court processes has helped reduce delays, brought the judiciary closer to the people, and made it more transparent.


He emphasized the vital role the judiciary plays in interpreting the law, adjudicating civil and criminal matters, and providing mechanisms for alternative dispute resolution, which are instrumental in the effective delivery of justice in the state.


Sanwo-Olu pledged to collaborate more with the judiciary and ensure adequate resources are provided for sustainability.


Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, in his remarks, emphasized the need for the judiciary to function independently and free from interference, commending the Sanwo-Olu administration for allowing this autonomy.


Delivering a lecture on “Exploring the Role of the Judiciary in Revitalizing Nigeria’s Economy through an Islamic Lens,” Imam Majeed Eleha urged judges, magistrates, and lawyers to remain impartial and uphold justice without fear or favor, emphasizing the crucial role they play in societal development and economic prosperity.


Dr. Rahman Lawal, who delivered a lecture on “Justice as a Catalyst for Economic Recovery and Political Stability in Nigeria,” referenced Quran Chapter 4, verse 135, stressing the condemnation of injustice and delays in justice by Allah. 


He urged judicial officers to uphold justice with integrity.


Rt. Revd Ifedola Okupevi, the Diocesan Bishop of the Cathedral, spoke on the sermon titled “God of Justice, God of Peace,” charging judges and lawyers to uphold truth always.


The Chairman of the Committee on Legal Year 2024/2025, Justice Adenike Coker, encouraged lawyers and legal stakeholders to participate in a webinar session titled; “CYBER OFFENCES IN THE DIGITAL STRATOSPHERE: CIVIL AND CRIMINAL IMPLICATIONS, TACKLING THE MENACE” scheduled for Tuesday.

African Church Suspends Primate Abbe Over Constitutional Violations

The African Church Management Committee has announced the suspension of its Primate, His Eminence Julius Olayinka Osayande Abbe, over what it described as multiple breaches of the Church’s constitution. The announcement was made at a press conference held in Lagos on Thursday and addressed by the Acting Lay President, Elder Pius Adebayo Sobambo. Themed "Setting the Records Straight: Upholding Truth, Constitutionality, and Unity in The African Church," the event outlined the Church's reasons for the suspension amid ongoing internal leadership crisis. Fulani Group Raises Alarm, Writes DSS Over Possible Breach of Peace in Kwara

  Three Fulani leaders in Kwara state have written to the Department of State Services (DSS) alleging plans by a group to cause breach of peace and urging the security body to act urgently. The three leaders, Alhaji Abdullahi Ahmed (Ga'a Federal), Abdullahi Arisekola (Ga'a Erin and Jowuro) and Muhammad Jowuro of Omu Aran claim that a group led by one Ande Mu'azu Buruku is currently hatching a leadership crisis that can unsettle the state.
