Stakeholders Praise Lagos Assembly’s Move to Legalize Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy
The Lagos State Government has expressed the confidence that the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy will contribute to bridging the leadership deficit in the state and Nigeria in general.
This view was echoed at a public hearing on a bill to establish the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy to provide a platform for the development and nurturing of young persons for leadership purposes in Lagos State and for connected purposes at the Lagos State Assembly, Alausa, Ikeja.
The Chairman of the Committee on Education (Tertiary Institutions) Hon. Owolabi Ajani said the bill would give legal backing to the Academy and ensured its sustainability.
“It aims to give young people the ability to learn from all facets of leaders from all across the state; not even just the state but in other parts or Nigeria as well. To exchange knowledge and gain better experience in terms of leadership. It’s main import is to better society as a whole,” said Hon. Owolabi.
The Lagos State Head of Service, Mr Olabode Agoro, said the Academy had test run for a year with 30 cohorts who were exposed to deep leadership training and mentoring.
Mr Agoro said the state had to be sure that the Academy was worth it before coming to the House with a bill.
“Before you put something into practice, there has to be a trial and a test run to see whether it’s workable. So, the first set was a trial which was to see it was something worth considering. Is it worthy of our time and effort?”
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Mrs Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, commended the House for considering the bill and urged the members to pass the legislation in the interest of the state.
She said, “this law will only help us to fast track and even expand what we are currently attaining and even going above going above and beyond in actually capitalizing off the young people we have in the state.”
Earlier, the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa represented by the Deputy Speaker, Hon Mojisola Lasbat-Miranda, said the “Bill has come when it’s most needed because our young people are becoming very vocal, bold and self-reliant, with the new arrangement the bill will nurture our young persons to be valued based leaders that will in turn lead the State and Country with a clear vision.
“Like it’s done around the world, Lagos would not be left behind, this academy would be a brainbox for well exposed youths with essential leadership skills with experience that will create a balance in their personal development and self-reflection,” said Lasbat-Miranda.
