Sanwo-Olu tasks residents of Banana Island on obeying environmental laws
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has tasked residents of Banana Island to continue to abide by the environmental laws of the state, in order to curb the flooding menace which threatens residents mobility in the rainy season.
Sanwo-Olu gave the charge at the inauguration of some projects undertaken by Banana Island Property Owners and Residents Association, Lagos (BIPORAL) on Saturday.
The projects inaugurated are Banana Island Administrative Office, a recreational park , Banana Island Club House, a fire fighting truck, tennis courts and an astro turf five aside football pitch.
"I know that the challenge on that road is a major outfall. And so it needs to be able to discharge that water, right, onto the canal that is out on the right and see how we also can navigate some canal and get it on the left.
"It's unfortunate that an island, that is, another island, does not even have access to enough water to discharge the water.
"So I'm going to, ask my Commissioner for Environment and Drainage, I will keep his name for security reasons to let us look at it again. Because it's not just to build a road.
"The road to be done is the easiest. It's actually the outfall. It is the drainage that usually kills any road, to put bitumen and the rest of it, but they don't like water. So it is an outfall.
The governor called on the residents to maintain and protect the power that lies in communal living, which he said had brought about development.
"We all have to respect each other to ensure that your individualism, you are surrendering to your executive, for them to be able to take care of the things that individually you do need to take care of if you didn't have an association.
"I will like to advise the incoming executives to apply wisdom,if you apply wisdom, you can draw from the wealth of your predecessor, it will help you greatly to be able to navigate and show that you have the leadership capability," he said.
Similarly, Mr Frank Aigbogun, the outgoing Chairman of BIPORAL urged the incoming executives to build on the success of his team of executives. He also noted that residents in Banana Island didn't build on drains.
"I will like to thank our governor, he does what he say's he will do, that's a man of integrity, I believe in the new members of the executive to build on our success.
"Also most of the houses built on drains are outside Banana Island and not inside, we work hand in hand with Lagos State and I urge the incoming executives to do same," he said.
Mr Abidemi Sonoiki, the incoming chairman said that being a member of the outgoing executive had prepared him for the task ahead.
"I served as the public relations officer in the outgoing executive, so I understand what needs to be done in order to ensure that residents have a peaceful and enjoyable home to come to.
"Also my focus is to ensure that we have a first aid service here so that in cases of emergency we can be well equipped," he said.
