LAGOS GOVERNMENT, WaterAid NIGERIA, CUMMINS COLLABORATE ON PUBLIC TOILET DESIGNS, CONSTRUCT 25 AS PROTOTYPE

In a bid to end open defecation in Lagos and provide access to inclusive toilet facilities in public places and institutions towards meeting SDG-6.2 by year 2030, the state government has partnered with WaterAid Nigeria and other implementers of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), to harmonize all public and institutional toilets prototypes across Lagos State while leveraging the proposed pilot construction in twenty-five public places across the metropolis.
The twenty-five public toilets, which will be inclusive to accommodate people with Disability is expected to have two hundred and fifty units.
At a roundtable meeting with relevant stakeholders funded by the Cummins, Microsoft and Church of Jesus Christ of latter Day Sanits, the Director Sanitation Services in the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Hassan Sanuth, pointed out that the state government intends to also construct one hundred public toilets within the next two years at strategic locations across the five Ibile Divisions of the state.
While commending WaterAid Nigeria and other partners for the innovation of standard public toilet designs, Mr Sanuth appealed to Lagosians to have attitudinal behavioural changes towards achieving open defecation free Lagos in line with SDG goal 6.
"The Lagos State government is leaving no stone unturned as it has declared zero tolerance for open defecation and has concluded plans to build 100 public toilets, though 27 locations have been identified, unavailability of land due to the topography of Lagos also remain a major challenge, but we will not rest on our oars to achieve an open defecation free Lagos"
Earlier, the WaterAid Nigeria Head of Lagos Office, Dr Adebayo Alao, emphasized the need for more awareness and sensitization for the public, while advocating increased budget allocation for the implementation of WASH Policy in Lagos for the benefit of all residents to reduce cholera and other communicable diseases.
On his part, WaterAid Sanitation and Hygiene Manager, Mr Dare Oduluyi, pointed out the need for more availability of energy efficient public toilets with soap and clean water for residents with continuous advocacy to adhere strictly to the open defecation free roadmap policy.
"To achieve open defecation free Lagos, all hands must be on deck, it is not only about building toilet as an infrastructure but making it conducive, convenient and inclusive for all users with availability of clean water and soap to promote handwashing after use of toilets"
Stakeholders' at the meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Consultants of Resilience Water Accelerator, Funders and Community leaders.
